Choosing The Right Golf Clubs

Steel vs Graphite Golf Clubs Pros and Cons

Are you struggling with the pros and cons of steel vs graphite golf clubs. Perhaps one of the most important golf decisions you will make will be choosing the right golf clubs. Beginner golfers frequently start out using an old set of clubs of a friend or family member. Garage sales are also a common source for beginner golfers to pick up their first clubs.

As newbies become more serious golfers the need to improve their game becomes more pronounced. If you choose clubs that work right for your particular golfing style then you are likely to see a rapid improvement in your game. Any seasoned golfer can tell you that having the right clubs can make a big impact on how your golf game goes.

Two of the common details that can influence the right clubs for you are the shaft length and head size. The two most popular materials are steel and graphite. The one you select can influence your swing.

Here are some pros and cons of steel vs graphite golf clubs to consider:

Graphite Golf Clubs:

Graphite clubs are well known for their flexibility and lightness. This does not necessarily mean it is the best choice for you. Your golf style has a big influence on your type of club. If your strokes tend to be slower than average, then a flexible graphite club could be your best choice.

Ladies, regular, senior, and extra stiff are the different ratings for which the flex of a club can be classified. Rarely will you see graphite clubs fall under the extra stiff rating. If you have the feeling that you need extra stiff clubs, then steel clubs would probably be your likely choice.

A lot of ladies, tall, average and petite, choose ladies golf club sets made of graphite because of the light weight. Having a light club provides them with more control over their swing. Generally women do not tend to have powerful swings.

No doubt the best thing you can do when choosing a club is to do the steel vs graphite golf clubs test. You do this by doing a few test swings using clubs from both categories at the club or sports shop in your local area to see what feels right for you. Keep in mind that you need to be sure your choice is something you could use for an entire game and would not become uncomfortable.

Steel Golf Clubs:

You will find that steel clubs are the cheapest choice of the two. Some view steel clubs as inferior to graphite because of the lower price. This simply is not true. If your particular golfing style works well with steel clubs, then there is no reason to go for the more expensive graphite.

Steel clubs are quite a bit stiffer than graphite. If you find fast swings tend to be your general style you may want to consider stiffer clubs. You will find this in steel clubs. But keep in mind fast swings coupled with heavy clubs can be a potentially dangerous scenario. You will need to make sure you always have a tight grip on your club.

Durability is an important feature of steel clubs. They tend to be much more durable than graphite. Because of this they generally last longer than graphite clubs. This is definitely a factor to consider when pondering steel vs graphite golf clubs. Another factor to consider is steel is a heavier material than graphite. Some consider this a negative factor, but then again some golfers prefer to feel the weight of the club when the swing.

I always feel that the best thing to do is to test both types and see which works best for your swing. Graphite is lighter -- which can translate into a faster swing & more yards. But, many golfers prefer the weight of steel. As with anything, it is simply a matter of personal preference.
